Please Vote to save America
We have 42 days until the mid-term elections. For America this is our best chance to reduce the likelihood of becoming a fascist dictatorship, run by a minority party. Democrats have a steep hill to climb because of the Republican gerrymandering. This illegal process is slowly being taken apart by the courts but in many places it still exists. This means more Democrats need to vote to offset the effects of unfair redistricting. The fact that it exists demonstrates that Republican are not interested in fairness, nor in the democratic ideal of 'one man, one vote'. They want to hold on to power in the face of the demographic tsunami of people of color who will eventually wash them away.
In the past the Republican party was a party of conservative ideas, not fundamentalist christian ideology, white supremacy, male chauvinism, or crazy Ayn Rand economics. It was a party that argued for fewer taxes and smaller government, a completely reasonable point of view and one that balanced out the Democratic belief in larger government and a more robust safety net.
But these arguments are a thing of the past now. The Republicans are destroying America in order to hold on to power. Gerrymandering destroys ‘the one man, one vote’ ideal. Separation of church and state is a fundamental premise of the constitution so when the Attorney General quotes the bible as a reason for upholding the law it destroy the secular state. Trump’s misogyny encourages and authorizes it in others, as does his racism - making the civil war and all it stood for null and void. Trump’s attacks on the press and rule of law are anti-American and threaten to damage both the Fourth Estate and our system of fair justice, blind and balanced. His lies implies that lying is okay, destroying truth. I thought we were a county of truth.
Trump’s is a symptom of the right wing flailing against the rising tide of people of colored folk and immigrants, a flailing that means they are drowning. The climate is changing whether you like it or not. The waters are rising. The Republican power base is drowning. The big “O” of Obamaism could have been a life preserver for them is they were willing to grab hold of his bipartisan overtures at the beginning of his presidency, but they didn't and still aren’t. So let them go under because of ignorance and prejudice.
I am going to Walla Walla, Washington next week to canvas for a Lisa Brown, a Democrat. I’ve never done that before but I have got to do something to try and save this wonderful country for my children and grandchildren. Please vote whether you are a Republican or Democrat. That is the American way. But you would be better served to vote Democratic in most cases if you care about preserving the America we love.

So appreciative of The 10th Justice column. Thank you for going to Walla Walla to canvas for Lisa Brown. It's what many of us should do in other districts, if possible. Countering wrongful Republican gerrymandering and getting out the vote, including getting voters to the polls, is crucial.
